love me some Wilmy

love me some Wilmy

There are a lot of things I love about Wilmington. In college, it was my refuge: my place of escape when I needed to be alone and clear my head. As a young, single mom with a kiddo who loved the water, it was an easy, budget-friendly adventure: a place to make memories. As a thirty-something, it was a place to nurture friendships, a place to learn that old things transition into new, a place of growth.

In 2018, I spent a lot of time in the area. I had applied to an awesome job, feeling like it could be a place for me to start a new kind of adventure. It was a phase of self-learning and discovery, and a relearning of sorts. That was the same year Florence hit the area. My heart felt so heavy and I wanted to do something to support the area, the people and places I loved.

Trying to find a method of giving back that was more than just donating a few bucks to relief organization (that may or may not have provided actual relief), I explored the area’s organizations to find something I could align with and support. I created some graphics, ordered products and created a mini-campaign to help raise awareness for how Feast Down East was coordinating with local farmers to make sure people in need had good, healthy (local) food.

Feast Down East

The mission of Feast Down East is to create a healthy, accessible local food system, which supports economic growth in Southeastern North Carolina. The organization originated in 2006 as a UNCW-affiliated economic development project, the Southeastern North Carolina Food Systems Program. Feast Down East was then established in 2010 as a nonprofit organization. Their programs help to support farm businesses, distribute local produce and increase access for all consumers. They also educate the public on the importance of buying local foods.
