“There’s this coffee shop I want to take you to if we have time after our meeting,” my Boss said to me as we were passing through Winston-Salem on our way to Mt. Airy this afternoon.

And I immediately thought, Hooray for coffee!!

I’ve been on a tea kick lately. And to be honest, it’s a concerted effort to drink less caffeine, less coffee creamer and add a little more herbal goodness to my life.

And I knew that it couldn’t be just any coffee shop. And…I was right.

Krankies Coffee in downtown Winston-Salem: where coffee, beer, wine and music meet.

Inside Krankies

The first thing I want to tell you is that you had better be paying attention. If you aren’t looking for it, you might miss the door. It was like a cool little secret on East Third Street, and only the cool people know about it. I guess what I am trying to say is that from the outside, it doesn’t look like your typical coffee shop kind of place.

Coffee at Krankies

Apparently, they do it all at Krankies, even roasting their own coffee beans. Now the truth is, I don’t know all the details. I was just there on an afternoon rabbit trail with my Boss before heading back to Burlington.

But I did see a bazillion choices for beverages, a busy community/gig board, notices for upcoming events, an afternoon “business” crowd (read: the freelancers and independent contractors were getting their afternoon caffeine fix) and a lending library (you know, one of those “take one, leave one” kind of situations). Not to mention there was also a section of outside seating that looked like the perfect place to be on a just-warm Spring evening.

If you’re in downtown Winston-Salem, go. Get some beverage. Take a book (and leave the one you just finished reading). Eat a bagel.

It’ll be nice.
